CLOSE OUT STRONG! Quit your flapping and ride your thermals…

By | Coaching Tips 'n Tools, Insights to help you #quickshift, Transformational Journeys | No Comments

“Quit your flapping and ride your thermals.”
D. Jones

Are you are falling prey to this time of year, the ever present negative energy and perhaps even “counting sleeps and sheeps” – not in an excited, overjoyed, childlike waiting for Santa and presents kind of way – but the kind counting diminishing sleeps till you FINALLY take your last commute to the office, or simply say aaaargh THANK GOODNESS this awful year is finally over. I can kick it to touch, desperately hoping never to have a repeat performance?Perhaps your attention is wrapped up in all the disgusts and none of the delights?  Too many people are getting pulled down by others around them, or, (maybe you are the one doing it) buying into the group energy  ….moan moan moan…. I’m tired, too busy, overwhelmed bla bla bladi bla.

What a true pity that is! Really!

But what if you actually want to run at 100 Km, and know it’s possible but you are being stopped by everyone else saying you can only run at 40 km an hour. Because, you know, it’s that time of year and everyone is winding down. Seriously? This is your life. EACH DAY MATTERS! Each thermal you can ride maters. Each kilometre you can run, matters. YOU MATTER!

cheeta-40

Sure, I get that every year has it’s ups and down, I’m IN that pot with you every year. Some years kick you about more than others, some years are filled with delight and I have learned it’s about being OK with that, in fact embracing it! I honestly believe each year has an element of all facets, from drab to fab scattered through the year. Life is about growth, challenge, expanding and learning. It’s not about comfort zones and staying small is it?
Whilst that feels wooly, warm and cozy, it’s not who we are intrinsically. Yet we resist so vehemently when our life wants us to expand. Duh!

And to go one step further – 2016 is a 9 year. Meaning it’s the end of a massive cycle of completion. GOT IT? If you add the numbers together 2016 =9. Therefore 2017 will be a 1 – fresh start, new beginnings. Think about it at it’s most simple level to just greet the concept with a hello.
A 9 ends the current numerical cycle we are in. Whilst there are also 7 -year cycles that operate at another level, there is a very predominant “decade” cycle, which is why we are so obsessed with celebrating the 20/30/40/50/60 etc birthdays.  So whilst the year is completing at one level as we do every year, even deeper than that we are completing a 9 YEAR CYCLE this year.

WOWSER! Just think about YOUR last 9 years. I bet you there is some magic there to remember and maybe some monsters too :)

But when we are dead tired, dead bored, and just stuck in the “ENOUGH ALREADY” zone, it’s almost darn near impossible to stop and harness the past 12 months with creativity and insight. Don’t let this pivotal and precious time of year get away from you untapped! And certainly don’t let the decade beat you down!

Many people reaching out to me are exhibiting one of the following modes: overwhelm, panic, where the heck has the year gone, adrenal burnout, or more often the “I just can’t be as$ed anymore” mode – either jarringly gritting your teeth till you go away and know you can FINALLY switch off and chill to a calmer routine or sign off that big final project for the year as you toss some thank you gifts at clients and dash out the door?

There is a different way.

At some point before 31st December, I set time aside (you will benefit most from about an hour to do it consciously), pour a glass of wine and do a very precious CLOSE OUT STRONG PROCESS to help me wander back over the past 12 months to create a deep awareness of the year gone by. I also do a much, much deeper process at least a month before the end of the year to ensure I‘m keeping my eye on the ball to end on a high.  Think of it as a simultaneous pat on the back and a wee kick up the proverbial to “land” everything.

WANT TO JUMP IN RIGHT NOW?
Here is a condensed version for you to use the following 3 questions to do a powerful 30- minute CLOSE OUT to 2016. Sit with some pen and paper and allow yourself to wander back through the entire year, looking for the high, the low and the let go…

  1. What are you most PROUD OF AND WHY?
  2. What was your #1 CHALLENGE you faced – how can you leverage what you learn from it?
  3. What ONE THING can you leave behind and let go of?

ARE YOU READY TO REALLY UP THE ANTE AND CLOSE OUT STRONG?
Yup, RIGHT NOW!  CLICK HERE

I am so passionate about this concept of completing the year with mindfulness and elegantly putting it to bed, that I have listened to my clients and created a 5-day process – which in reality takes you only 5 hours, just an HOUR A DAY. Don’t drag 2016 into the new year with you!

5- DAYS TO CLOSE OUT STRONG.

STEP IN and Reflect on your year
STEP UP by Committing  to Complete
HARNESS the year’s challenges with wisdom with hindsight
Acknowledge USHERS
Put the year elegantly to bed and LET GO
STEP OUT into 2017 with clarity and a “theme”

Courageous conversations bla bla bla…

By | Coaching Tips 'n Tools, Insights to help you #quickshift | No Comments

How to have the right conversations so it’s not all bla bla bla

There is an incredible POWER and emotional release that comes from having COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS. And more often than not you have to have a different perspective to allow yourself to even go there. In the fascinating world of CLUTTER that I “play” in, I believe that holding on to things in the emotional realm can carry more weight than all the contents of your entire house, or office. Hundreds of kilograms! It is tangible, heavy, debilitating and will always keep you STUCK IN THE PAST. If you feel like your life is being ruled and ruined by others, by things that have transpired in your life perhaps it’s time to take a long hard look at what YOU NEED to do now to heal and release yourself from the pain of what you are holding onto.

Do you need to have any courageous conversations in your life? Do you even know what they are when I say the word?

When I have the privilege of sharing time with audiences as their speaker I will often get hundreds of people in a room to put their hands on their hearts, or do an old fashioned “pinkie swear” – attaching little fingers to their best friend or colleague – as a public commitment to clear out heavy emotional clutter. That’s the first step after being honest enough to admit that you even need to have one. So getting a room full of people on their feet to bravely share the courageous conversation they need to have in their life, can be an immense turning point. All too often we cannot even get to the point to ADMIT to ourselves that there is a conversation to be had, because it so much easier to stay on THIS side of the conversation. It’s safer. We also find all sorts of excuses, some conscious and others underlying that drive our behaviours unbeknownst to us …

We are too BUSY

Too lazy

Too scared

Too locked in victim mode

Everyone else needs me right now

It will change if I just let it “be” and not rock the boat

Bla bla bla

Coming “clean” and being honest with yourself and others will positively effect you on all levels and will feel like an immense fog lifting. It won’t necessary solve it all immediately, but no longer having to hide and keep up the façade will offer some relief to your heart and soul.

What is a courageous conversation?

It is probably the one you DO NOT WANT TO HAVE. The one that fills you with the most dread, fear or embarrassment. Or the one that may possibly change your life the most through the risk and guts it requires from you. Or the one that may require you to walk away from people and places you love. The one that can turn the pit of your stomach to acid and your legs to jelly in a flash. The one that feels like it will rip you apart even just thinking about it.

Yep…the one you need to have!

OFTEN IT IS WITH YOURSELF!

You already know which one it is you need to have as you are reading this blog…but knowing humans pretty well, including myself, you are probably pushing it aside right now and pretending it’s not THE one to have… all the fear kicks in…I know what we do as I have been there!!

Here are a few examples of “opening lines” for these big ol’ chats

  • I resent how much you work over the weekends, every weekend
  • I have been having an affair for the past 2 years
  • I am no longer in love with you, even though I love you
  • I need to go into debt review and we may lose the house
  • I have been making use of internet porn
  • I am an alcoholic
  • I’m sorry that I ……
  • I’m angry at you for being absent in the kids lives
  • I am illegal in this county and want to apply for legal residency
  • I stole money from you ten years ago
  • I have just been retrenched and I am terrified to talk about it
  • You are a bully and I’m scared of you
  • I really need to be acknowledged for my hard work on this project
  • I love you and …will you marry me?
  • You still owe me that money you borrowed and its affecting our friendship
  • I can no longer tolerate your abuse of animals and am reporting you to the SPCA

What are the real clues you need a courageous conversation?

  • There is something that hangs over you every single day causing stress
  • You are hiding something from someone / several people
  • There is a feeling of shame, embarrassment, guilt, fear etc
  • You are angry or even slightly annoyed with someone
  • The mere thought of having the conversation leaves you sweaty or anxious
  • There is huge potential risk attached to the conversation
  • You feel like you could “lose” something dear to you
  • It is easier NOT to have the conversation ‘cos it is very uncomfortable!

Lots of us will say…. ah Kate you know I HAVE dealt with this, it is better to let sleeping dogs lie, don’t open the can of worms, it is not worth the risk, I will deal with this on my own, I’m not good with being honest etc. We have a hundred valid excuses. But if there are still any emotions that come up for you that have not been dealt with or addressed, it is always better out than buried inside you. The amount of energy it requires to keep something hidden is like holding a big beach ball under water…it always wants to pop up and bounce back on top of the water.

Is there a real RISK?

Of course there is a risk.

Let’s be real here, but life is risky every single day!

If you are trying to live your life without any risk at all, you are not truly living, and if you are trying to live your life everyday playing it too safe, you die metaphorically LONG before your death.

Risk is not always a bad thing!

There is a potentially positive risk that the outcome will be way better than you can ever have imagined, or at the very least you get to feel the relief at having had the conversation and be able to move on. But yes, to be brutally honest in some instances the outcome could be your worst nightmare. The very thing you are trying to avoid hence one of the biggest reasons you are NOT having the conversation. But at what cost to you? You may lose your job, your partner, go to jail, become bankrupt, get evicted, become the subject of a scandal and even lose friends.

But what about doing the right thing for the right reasons and being fearless to set yourself free?

Sometimes you may even need to get professional advice before having a courageous conversation. But in my experience the reward usually outweighs the risk.

You have to be willing to walk through the fire to the other side….

When expectancy rules in your favour…

By | Coaching Tips 'n Tools, Insights to help you #quickshift | No Comments

There are two ways to look at expectancy – one is on a purely materialistic, foot stomping, “get your own way” kind of way to look at it. The second is the way that paves the way to miracles happening … and what I’m talking about below.

Whatever your religious persuasion or affiliation, miracles can occur in any form –  be it in gifts, unexpected pleasures, hardships being overcome, little pearls of wisdom dropping into your lap, a chance meeting with someone that somehow changes the course of your life.

Miraculous things happen in each and every moment and if you are looking out for them…a positive expectancy of finding the good and the glow in every minute, rather than the sick and the slow.

So what do you EXPECT IN YOUR LIFE?

Miracles do not have to be massive positive explosions of energy or gigantic outcomes…they can be a collection of small wondrous occurrences, that once witnessed can alter your life forever. A smile from someone who is worse off that you is a form of minute by minute miracle, a flower blossoming from mud is one too; being able to get up and survive each day no matter what is thrown at you is a miraculous testament to the strength of human spirit; an animal’s unconditional love no matter how you treat it  they will always welcome you home again – we could learn from that as humans.

So this beautiful sentence “The Atmosphere of Expectancy is the Breeding Ground for Miracles” that I heard on a TV channel really grabbed me from a life perspective!

I think it is just the reminder that we have to create the atmosphere from within….how you take and make each moment of each day determines the overall outcome of your life. If you have a positive atmosphere that you create in and around your life, you will live in that atmosphere like your own little magic bubble. Once you “map” or “match” that positive atmosphere with the concept of also constantly expecting great things to happen to you, with magic and miracles coming your way all the time, good to prevail and happiness to be possible……well then that too will be your reality. And even when the  inevitable bumps come along in the road, you will see them in perspective of the whole – and gain some insight and wisdom from the event, even when it is life threatening or heartbreaking. It’s about being able to be OK in the middle of the storm even when you want to die. The expectancy that this too shall pass, I will get through this no matter what.

What you focus on, INCREASES. That is a simple universal spiritual law. So if you focus on expecting more and more positive things to flood your way, that’s what you will get more of. Energy can move towards you because you are ready for it and welcoming it. Do you know that you can chase things away as well…..by simply having the wrong attitude, being pessimistic, negative, focussing on everything that you don’t want and having an atmosphere of negative expectancy?

Where attention goes ENERGY FLOWS!!!

So when you IMMERSE yourself in the atmosphere of POSITIVE expectancy, then ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. Live with the possibility of magic and see what happens to you.

Be open to flow in your life, be open to opportunity. Align your desires with what is for your highest goals. Have goals and outcomes but let go of attachment to the outcome. OOOOhhhhh boy that is often a hard one hey!!! If something is meant to be yours you will not be able to keep it from you, but you always have to be willing to STEP UP in your life.

Breaking the Seal

By | Coaching Tips 'n Tools, Insights to help you #quickshift | No Comments

Hello everybody – today I’m here to share a little message about Breaking the Seal.

Any idea what it means?

I was explaining the concept to my Stockbridge based USA book publisher this past week as we were planning and plotting launching my current and new books in the USA. The concept that I remember growing up as a teenager was that as I was starting to drink alcohol a little bit; go out with boys; go out “partying”etc. we would know about this following concept: If you were for e.g. drinking beer, you had a window period of a couple (up to four) of beers that you could drink until you literally had to “break the seal”.  I know it’s a little bit odd, but breaking the seal would mean the first time that you would have to go to the bathroom. After you did that, that was it, you were done “holding on” for the night. You would have to go and pee probably every 20 minutes to half an hour after breaking the seal. And then it just flowed continuously. With ease, no stopping the flow.

I’ve often spoken about this concept in coaching and reflected on it in my own life about the times when things appear really stagnant, or something new is about to take off and it is all “on pause” until the seal is broken. It’s like everything is just hanging on till the very last minute. When talking about how to grow your business or make shifts in a specific areas, it’s that concept of, “What one thing do you need to do to break the seal”?

Breaking the seal means you start the flow that is inevitably unstoppable. Cool huh?

Today, I have personally just broken the seal on the USA market for my first book that has been published here called, ‘Clear Your Clutter.’ We hosted a talk at a beautiful, local chocolate shop called, ‘Chocolate Springs’, and we had a very small, lovely, intimate gathering and we sold 4 books and also donated one to the local library. Is it a lot? Well, perhaps Not in the grand scheme of things, but you know what? It’s 400% more than what I had sold this morning.

I’m feeling fantastic. I also feel like I have a new home here. My publisher, Deborah, and her husband are just delightful. It’s so wonderful to think about breaking the seal on the USA market, because this has been something that I have been dreaming about. I intended it. Created a goal. I had a lot of support from a lot of people, and the seal has been broken, so USA, watch out. Book sales, watch out.

The question really is – What area of your life, yes YOURS, do you need to break the seal on?

What is it that you need to do to get the flow going?
If you’re starting a coaching business, how do you just get your first client?
If you know it’s finally time to de-clutter – WHERE oh WHERE and which shelf to attack first? Just pick one!

I would have honestly been happy today having sold 1 book. Which we actually did before the talk even started and she was simply in the coffee shop and couldn’t stay for the talk. And I’m thinking – “That’s it. I’ve sold ONE book. I’ve broken the seal. Wooooohhhhhooooo ”

Do you need your first client? You can’t have 10 until you have 1!
If you want to break the seal around exercise, how do you just get started – go for your first short walk, sign up for that class or book your first assessment with a personal trainer?
How do you simply think about participating and creating flow. My friend, the fairy godmother, will love this, because she’s all about flow. I want you to think about breaking the seal and to honestly admit to yourself what do you need to do?
A passion, a hobby, a career, saying no?

Perhaps that FIRST phone call to set “IT” in motion.
Invite that mentor out to coffee?
Ask “you know who” for that lead they promised?
Look at that holiday destination?
Outsource that problem to a professional?
Say YES to the first date.
Try on a new outfit?

Perhaps for you it’s starting to get organized and de-clutter your home or your office. So breaking the seal would simply be starting with your desk. Don’t worry about the rest of the office for now. If it’s your entire home, perhaps, as outlined in my book, you start simply with your bedside table. Small! If it’s the garage, perhaps you start with 1 shelf. Start as small as you need to to break the seal, start the flow, keep going.

RIGHT – THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NEXT TO BREAK THE SEAL!

The COS factor – CLOSE OUT STRONG!

By | Coaching Tips 'n Tools, Insights to help you #quickshift, Transformational Journeys | No Comments

You are “counting sleeps” aren’t you?

…either till you go away, switch off and chill to a calmer routine or sign off that final project for the year as you toss some thank you gifts at clients and dash out the door?

Many of you have been begging for this newsletter – impatient creatures that you are – as it IS one of my favourite annual processes to do. At some point before 31st December, I pour a glass of wine and do the following process to help me wander back over the past 12 months to create a deep awareness of the year gone by.

Where you start is not as important as where you finish! Zig Ziglar

Consciously closing out your PERSONAL year – as opposed to simply scrambling to get your desk and obligations clear – is about bringing a sense of order, understanding and insight to your last 12 months.

Think of it as a simultaneous pat on the back and a wee kick up the proverbial.

I believe life is always a dance between the fab and the kr@p and it’s about letting yourself flow between the two, not getting too stuck on either side. 2015 for me has been a rollercoaster of note, launching my second book, appearing in a self development movie, crowdfunding, walking 2 red carpets, helping 22 writers on their journey with their book, re-creating an online business and letting romantic passion sky rocket …phew.

What about YOU?

If you feel that some conscious questions could help you close out the year, here are the 12 pivotal questions I will be using:

1.  Describe 2015 as if it was the title of a book to capture the ESSENCE or THEME of the year. Be creative and wacky if need be.

2.  What are you most PROUD of?

3. Find one or two HIGHLIGHTS in each of the following 8 aspects of your life, to ensure you do a full sweep of your life.

Career

Finances

Home & Family

Health

Spirituality

Fun & Leisure

Self Development

Relationships & communication

4. What is your all time FAVOURITE memory of the year?

5. What was your #1 CHALLENGE? You can either consider something in each of the 8 above areas, or

perhaps there is just one overriding thing that stands out for you.

6. What QUALITIES / STRENGTHS did you call on to overcome this challenge? List as many as you can as this shows your inner and outer resources!

7. Where else could you APPLY these same qualities in 2016?

8. Was there anything on your radar / goal list for 2015 that you DID NOT ACHIEVE?

 9. What STOPPED you achieving it?

OK…. Seriously, excuses aside what REALLY stopped you – HINT- it’s usually a fear or limiting belief at play?

10. LOOSE ENDS?  Is there anything that would be awesome to complete in order to finish off the year STRONG? Could be a last appointment to book, finishing that business plan, sending thank you letters…

Anything that will give you the final close out you deserve.

It is the loose ends with which (wo)men hang themselves. Zelda Fitzgerald

11. VERY NB: In order to create the right energy for your life, what do you need to LEAVE BEHIND AND LET GO OF that will not serve you to take forward into 2016? A person, attitude, job, idea, resentment?

12. What are you potentially STEPPING INTO in 2016 that will catapult your life forward?

I trust these will help YOU close out and consciously consider your year so that you can move to 2016 with strength, insight and awareness.

NO! is a complete sentence – how to say it without feeling too guilty.

By | Coaching Tips 'n Tools, Insights to help you #quickshift | No Comments

NO is a complete sentence. Don’t you love that reminder. But realistically, we need to learn the 5 ways to say NO without feeling TOO guilty.

It’s time for a little compassion with a kick- Let’s get real now! If you are always doing the things that others want you to do, or are doing stuff from a misguided place of feeling shitty about yourself if you don’t do it – well maybe its time to gird your loins and grow up? I have, many a time, done stuff because it was the right thing to do, or because it was “expected of me” or sometimes I just felt too ashamed to say no, cos’ I didn’t believe I deserved it ….the list goes on and on. IF you keep it up, like I did for a while, well then you will never get around to the stuff that’s cool, delicious and exhilarating to YOU. You will be one miserable creature on the planet.

Of course it’s tough to say no – I mean the voices in your head just don’t shut up do they? – What will they think, it makes me selfish, they need me, my stuff can wait, I have to do more, of course I’ll skip yoga to do this, I’m too tired to tell the kids to put their toys away…. blab la bla it goes on and on.

NO @#$$%!^!&!&**!!! (That was just a LOT of emphasis!)

Actually NO. The world is full of people doing all sorts of things for the wrong reason – like a job they hate, living in a house with a lifestyle they can’t afford, in a relationship that seriously doesn’t serve them, taking on projects at work beyond expectations not because they want the promotion but because they are the dogsbody, generally making commitments nodding their head yes when their heart is SCREAMING NO -people who are then so miserable that its almost impossible to fathom doing any good for anyone else. OR perhaps are so hell bent on pleasing everyone else, putting self at the bottom of the pile, that you are feeling deeply depressed, inadequate, unfulfilled and VERY busy but oh boi, VERY BORED!

Is this you at the moment? Or someone in your life that you see doing this?

One of the challenges humans face is the art of attempting to say no without feeling guilty. Do you think a lion feels guilty for killing the buck, or the hyena stealing the carcass from the lion? NO, just do it. Maybe that’s a little harsh because we have compassion, generosity, a conscience – but you also need to put YOURSELF back on the top of your priority list! OK, so maybe it’s really impossible for us not to feel ANY miniscule twinge of guilt whatsoever, but we are faced with the dilemma of doing it anyway. Especially when you start putting this concept of saying NO! into place- people are SHOCKED when you DARE to say no! Seriously you will get a heck of a lot of push- back doing it, but what if the tinge of guilt is fleeting, and the delight of standing up for yourself, getting clearer boundaries, being more honest will far outweigh that feeling of guilt. If you don’t try, you’ll never know?

These two concepts of guilt and saying no seem inextricable linked in our brains, and yet it is very debilitating and energy draining to say the least. It is darn near impossible to feel intrinsic joy and be fully alive when you are filled with guilt. Resentment, being pissed off at other people for so much stuff, and not giving the things that truly matter, your time and energy will not make for a HAPPIER YOU! We need to learn that we are allowed to say no, and in fact if you want your life and the world to be a better place you are OBLIGED to say no to certain things that come onto your radar – but you may need some help in getting your head around this foreign concept. It all boils down to the concept of self worth and believing that your time is of value to YOU. When you are constantly saying yes to everyone else and putting yourself at the bottom of your own priority list, you will be the loser in your own life.

Here are some tips to nudge you along the way as you get started. Feel the panic already?

TIP 1 – Re-frame!

Rather than thinking about saying NO to others….re-frame it to think about saying YES to yourself. This simple switch will help to minimise and reduce the guilt trip a tad. The moment you take yourself more seriously and value your own priorities and goals to achieve each day, others will start taking you more seriously as well. You teach others how to treat you, so if you want a different result to always feeling like the doormat -take different action. Start with SMALL “NO’s” about little things to exercise the NO muscle! Then it is locked into your body for the bigger ones. Or in reality, maybe the bigger ones are easier for you – I know that when I’m pushed beyond my own self imposed boundaries, I can bellow Nooooooooo and simply be DONE with that issue. What is it like for you?

TIP 2 – Get Over Yourself!

SIMPLY – get over yourself! Harsh but true – the compassion with a kick! Stop thinking that you need to be all things to all people. Whilst this seems wonderfully generous, you will come off second best and land up having nothing to offer. This will lead directly to the idea that you do not value yourself in the equation, and every time you say yes to others when you really ought to be saying no, you will land up feeling resentful, angry, used and taken advantage of. So give up this need to feel bad about yourself and to make you feel needed and important through being everything to everyone and nothing to yourself.

TIP 3 – Buffer zone

Use a pre-designed “buffer line as a standard response from now on whilst still learning the art of saying NO. This is especially great to apply to the your potentially vulnerable zone – e.g. the one where you always say yes then kick yourself afterwards – maybe you always get caught by other mom’s for school runs, or you are always the sucker taking on the extra work load, or you are always the one that travels across town to meet your friend – You can pull it out of your toolbox when you need it. Try this out for practice…when someone asks you to do something, you can say;

“I would love to help you out but I must check my diary and I will get back to you tomorrow”.

That way you do not say YES as your standard answer, and effectively created a pause for you to assess if you want to do it or not. Be aware you normally say YES out of habit.

TIP 4 – EASY DOES IT

Never say an outright NO as this can feel horribly foreign to you and rude to the other person. So you could start your answer with …

“I would love to but I am unable to right now”.
Please remember that you do not ever need to give reasons or excuses as to why you cannot do something for someone else….give up the need to JUSTIFY your every answer to someone else. NO is actually a complete sentence.

TIP 5 – PATIENCE!

Have patience with yourself. Just because you want to say no doesn’t make it easy! Remember you are learning a new skill that’s foreign to you. It can help to acknowledge the following idea …

“Even though it is really difficult for me to say no without feeling guilty, I am going to value myself enough to say no anyway”

This can help you remember you are chartering new territory and the moment you do NOT expect it to be easy every time, it will help you keep moving forward. In no time at all it will become second nature for you to discern when to say yes and when to say no from your inner guidance as opposed to guilt and habit.

Written from such a heartfelt, truthful and sincere place, the result is nothing short of a miracle.  It’s a multicoloured roadmap to feeling lighter, more focused, action orientated and all the while being playful along the journey.  I particularly loved the potato exercise and found it fiercely challenging and such a relief when I could finally unload those pesky, heavy items and baggage.  Most of the glitches resonated with me, but the one that loomed large in my life is that of being a “Dreadful Dismisser”, not a good thing when one has chosen a creative profession where there is no such easy demarcators as right and wrong.  Valuing others opinions more than my own kept me stuck in a development cycle of wishy washy scripts until I read this book, committed to the self development work suggested in these pages and finally, courageously prioritised my own opinion and value.  I now have a script that I am proud of, that reflects my vision and the magic of the book, and am willing to stake a claim on my choices.  It’s not to say that other people’s opinion don’t count, it’s just that mine does too.  And it’s not to say that I have composed “Eroica” but I trust myself and my judgement to stand firm, head held up high and say, it’s my personal “Eroica”. Thank you Kate. Patrick Holzen – Film and TV Producer. London

“Sharing the details of a dark, hard past, Kate pulls back the curtain on all that holds us back…the secrets that keep us from a bright, happy life. Raw, revealing, and authentic, she shares her hard-earned insights on becoming honest with ourselves so that we can find genuine happiness and live large. I’m honored to help Kate bring her powerful message to the masses in the movie “The Secrets of the Keys” ~Robin Jay – Filmmaker (The Key Movies), Author. Las Vegas

Ditch your Glitch – my awakening – Kate Emmerson is a friend and mentor, an inspiration and her book “Ditch your Glitch” has allowed me to realize my Glitch, to identify with her story, to understand that I am not alone. This book is a revolutionary eye opener into where I am right now, what needs to be addressed, how to shift change and more importantly, how to ensure a continuity of growth. As an entrepreneur, I get so suffocated with my own rules, my own struggles, my own failure that I never for one minute realised that this in fact was my Glitch, the essence of what is holding me back. Kate, thank you – this is my beginning. Janine Starkey -Speaker and Designer for House of Janine. International Image Consultant. South Africa.

I have consumed many business and self-help books over the years. I was curious to see what new learning Kate would have for me in her new book, Ditch Your Glitch. Was I surprised when she went straight to my Glitch at the beginning of the book, describing it in finest detail. It made me pay attention to what followed. Kate uses old tools and new ones to shift a whole bunch of stuff in a very short time, if you follow her process. She shares hugely valuable exercises in an economical way. The potatoes blew me away. After reading the book I see potatoes everywhere. You must try her potatoes. My thinking shifted in the most powerful way. Forever. Thank you Kate for life changing learning, magical mind maps to plot my future with, and potatoes. Melanie Brummer – Entrepreneur www.facebook.com/melanie.brummer. South Africa

“The pages of Ditch Your Glitch hold a wisdom and energy that is hard to express. Kate’s authenticity complimented by her passion will help you create remarkable shifts. I have attended a self development growth club for a year and I find that Kate’s book encapsulates most of what I have learnt.” Celynn Erasmus – Professional Speaker, Registered Dietician, Author, Passionate Foodie. South Africa

In writing “Ditch Your Glitch”, Kate Emmerson takes you on a step-by-step process beyond your comfort zone to honestly face aspects of yourself and your life that you may not be comfortable with and to realise that success in your life starts with you. Committing to the 21 step process helps you to truthfully face those areas that need to be changed and gives you the confidence to start setting big, audacious goals to become the best version you can be of yourself. Success is achieved by taking small steps that bring you closer to your goals. The lessons learnt are captured daily in the journal you will purchase, allowing you to track your own progress and to recognise those special milestones. Kate shares her life lessons; she even says “I never offer up processes or ideas to clients if I have not tried and proved them for myself”. It is a comfort to know that you do not have to go on this experience on your own. Kate has developed a Facebook page that allows you to post updates on the progress you have made and those light-bulb moments that have resulted out of the process, and also to share the areas you may be struggling with and to get support and ideas from the group to push through these blockages.

We are privileged to be guided by such an authentic leader, who has lived the life she is inspiring us to live. This is not just a book of theory; these lessons have guided Kate to achieve the most wonderful things she has achieved in her life. Kate gently and firmly spurs you on to take bold steps through openly sharing her journey with the readers, making the lessons believable and achievable. I encourage you to read this book which will challenge you to get started on a whole new path to success and fulfilment with a renewed zest. I know that’s what it did for me. Colleen Larsen – CE: Business Engage South Africa

“Kate Emmerson has done it again! DITCH YOUR GLITCH encourages us to look deep into our core to find our magnificence. The only glitch is our glitches keep us from feeling magnificent and being our true self. Ms. Emmerson expertly guides us to ditch our glitch with easy to follow steps and enlightening examples. Kate bravely shares her own back story and exposes her glitches showing that she doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk.” Carol Scibelli: Author of “Poor Widow Me” www.carolscibelli.com. New York.

Kate Emmerson’s “Ditch Your Glitch”, is witty, down to earth, personal, full of great reminders, and my favorite part is that her book embodies Kate’s spunk, spark, energy as a person and her same zeal for life.  “Ditch Your Glitch” is also open and honest which is so important for others to connect & relate as I, the reader did. Thanks for the journey Kate. Carly Alyssa Thorne –  Author, Speaker, Producer, Director www.CarlyAlyssaThorne.com Los Angeles

‘Kate Emmerson is the ‘Indiana Jones’ of shifting lives and always finds a way of turning something that is usually at the bottom of our To Do list (How the bleep do I stop being stuck in a rut?!)… into an adventure ( clearing away cobwebs, reading maps, finding treasure). Eventually we realise that what started out as an ordinary goal ends up being an extraordinary journey (.. with buried loot everywhere!). In ‘Ditch your Glitch’ we get the chance to find our very own ‘Holy Grail’ – come Home to Self, harness our power, and play with our magic. For someone like me who keeps tripping myself up on the “same ol’ same ol’” issues, I found the chapters on self limiting beliefs, top ten values and getting Balsy with Boundaries to contain many ‘Aha!’ moments and I am eager now to apply these to my everyday disciplines. I am also significantly impressed with how its possible to move towards forgiveness with the help of a sack of potatoes! ‘How to Ditch your Glitch’ is an honest easy to follow book which will give you honest easy to reap benefits …you just have to SHOW UP and commit to the adventure.’ Natasha Sutherland – Author, Actress and Motivational Speaker. South Africa.

Kate Emmmerson has so much passion for life, and she has shared it boldly in her book “Clear Your Clutter”, her YouTube videos, and now in her new book “Ditch Your Glitch”. I have yet to meet a person who hasn’t had a story, a struggle, some pain in their life.  Too many people try to pick themselves up, and try to move on…only to find themselves in the same or similar situation.  We’ve all had things that have snagged us in our lives, but few go through the effort to unsnag themselves….to look at what’s holding them back, and why. Kate Emmerson has done that in her own life, and has broken down the steps that got her past her own glitches and has written this wonderful book to help you “Ditch Your Glitch” as well.  The things that are holding you back from where you want your life to be.  Kate has beautifully blended her own personal experiences, her clients examples, and practical exercises that walk you through each step of the way, along with holding you accountable so you are gently pushed towards your goals that you have defined. If you’re ready to move forward in life, this book will help you do just that. Lori Park- Angel Intuitive, Chicago

“From beginning to the end this is a book that you won’t be able to put down!  It truly will help you shift your life and perspective.  There are so many great pieces of information that are shared in ‘Ditch My Glitch’ that will inspire you to take action today!  I found myself creating a new vision board for the 3rd and 4th quarter of the year in order to set my personal and professional life up for success for the year ahead.  Kate’s book will motivate you to be your very best self and will also help you to reach unlimited potential!”~ Beth Bracaglia – Chief Simplicity Officer of Simply Organized and creator of Beth Bracaglia’s Simply Inspired.   www.simplyorganizedtoday.com Ellicott City, MD

“I met Kate quite recently and was immediately captivated by her energy and stimulating conversation. This book is no different to the spirit she evokes in her conversations. The honesty and transparency of her personal story in the beginning illustrates the authentic nature of the content she shares in assisting you and I to truly transform our lives. Ditch Your Glitch is a meaningful and real step-by-step transformational work out that, if you remain true to your commitments, will bring about the desired changes in your life. I feel like I am thriving more than before I read this book. I have moved from mere existence to truly living. And you too can!”~ Alex Granger – CEO: The Possibility of YOU, Professional Speaker, and Author. JHB South Africa

I found Kate Emmerson’s Ditch Your Glitch to be a wonderful mix between The Artist’s Way and Jack Canfield’s – The Success Principles.  In it, she presents a practical step by step guide to creating personal transformation by understanding and addressing those things that are holding you, the reader, back from creating a better, more fulfilled life.  She doesn’t tell you how to do it – she shows you how to do it. By using her own personal journey as insightful examples, you feel as if she is there with you in this easy to follow, actionable, transformative and very readable book. Tessa Graham – Capturing Brilliance, Creating Brands, Building Businesses. South Africa.

From the start this was a truly inspiring book. It kept me wanting more and more and more each day although you said wait. Be patient.  This book is like money in that you always want to have it by your side. Through all my massive obstacles I managed to work through every single exercise in the book. What a challenge it was especially for me for –  someone suffering from depression, illness, health problems, financial problems  and life going nowhere. The most challenging exercise was the “potato” one. What a challenge to keep that bag of potatoes with me wherever I went. I was looked at strangely and funnily but luckily I never felt the need to explain myself. Only the closest people in my life knew about what I was up to. After day 4 I realised that I am carrying all this weight in my heart and on my shoulders. I started to write sms’es, make calls (the ones I could call) and although most of them hurt me I started the forgiving process. No need for thousands of rands at a psychologist etc. This book helped me finally get over my issues with forgiving which was the hardest part. How do you forgive someone … well I did it with Kate’s help and I feel lighter than ever (not in body weight yet) in mental weight.  I left those hurtful potatoes of my past scattered all over the field and it felt so good. I am now in control of my emotions and I will not allow people to use and abuse me anymore. Lighting my candle the next day and writing in my journal was actually the shortest paragraph  ever but filled the lightest feeling of relief . I have taken action on all the aspects of my life and it feel great. I have made my bucket list even though only a couple of things for now –  I will do them – maybe not tomorrow but I have set myself a time frame for this expanding list – I am taking everything step by step. I will buy this book for all my family members and my friends who I know will benefit from this.Thank you for this, Kate, it has changed my life and made it much easier doing everything step by step. This book it is a complete eye opener and I am deeply relieved about taking stock of my life and sorting everything out for myself and putting myself on my priority list for once. Yolanda Duvenhage, A brav woman and mum

If you feel like you are spiralling out of control, feel a tad fuzzy and cotton woolly between the ears, and don’t seem to be handling yourself all too well, ….. then you may be focusing all your attention on THINGS YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER AND WONDERING WHY IT IS ALL GOING PEAR SHAPED!

About 5 years ago, I got fascinated and deeply interested in mastermind groups – I followed my heart and gathered TWO of my own mastermind groups which became my trusted group of fellow travellers, feedback, support, challenge and heck – sometimes even a place to cry when it felt too much. I have since facilitated about 10 of them over the years, and now I even do niched ones for writers! General mastermind groups check in usually every two weeks and have deliverables we each committed to in order to shift super fast- I recall one week in particular when I wasn’t shifting so fast, felt like I was spiralling out of my life and needed to get to the underlying reason and understand the bigger picture to move beyond it.

I learnt one of the most simple little models through a fellow coach in the group, that just slapped me in the face in a good way, and I have been sharing it with clients ever since. As I learn, I love to pass on things that I find useful, so here goes, in simple form…

There are 3 aspects in life:

  1. The things you have absolutely NO CONTROL OVER
  2. The things you have CONTROL OVER
  3. The things you CAN INFLUENCE

I realised in one area of life I was WAY too focused on that which I have no control over – getting caught up in other people’s business. I took the lesson and applied it. I can also get caught up in the humaness of life and was focusing too much energy on others, in particular my significant other at the time, at the expense of myself. Bothering about what THEY were doing, not doing, saying, not saying blab la bla. SHEW quick lesson for myself. The moment I recognised it in the mastermind, then I could shift it. I was reminded that when myself or clients are in any of the following scenarios, then you too may be focused in all the wrong places:

* battling to get pro-actively started

* have lost your way and looking at what is NOT happening, grumbling and moaning

* are expending too much energy on others

* feeling resentful and desperate

* forcing things to MAKE THEM HAPPEN

* not trusting the universal flow

* constantly playing things out in your head

* not having conversations you need but having the same ones over again

* focused on working hard, not smart or right

* not looking after self appropriately health wise

…… then often it means we are way too focused on number one, ie, the THINGS OVER WHICH WE HAVE NO CONTROL. This aspect will eat up all your energy and reserves and spit you out at the other end. I suggest you need to consider letting these things go as they do not serve you, in order to bring all your attention to number 2 and then number 3.

Get started by reigning in all your energy, releasing the need to control others or outcomes and focusing in what IS WITHIN your control.

Pay attention to things such as:

Your attitude – what is and isn’t serving you?

Your habits

Looking after yourself healthwise – get rid of that energy!

YOUR to do list – leave others’ alone!

Your outstanding tasks or goals

Doing all that you can to get a project to a certain stage

Fulfilling your commitments

…then letting go if it feels like you are forcing things.

As the saying goes- REEL YOUR NECK BACK IN and keep your nose in your own business and that way you shouldn’t have time to be bothered with others’  business.

When YOU are in control again, then you will start exercising a positive influence over others.
